Filipe Campante, Cambridge, MA
Federico Sturzenegger, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Andrés Velasco, London, England

Macroeconomic policy is one of the most important policy domains, and the tools of macroeconomics are among the most valuable for policy makers. Yet there has been, up to now, a wide gulf between the level at which macroeconomics is taught at the undergraduate level and the level at which it is practiced. At the same time, doctoral-level textbooks are usually not targeted at a policy audience, making advanced macroeconomics less accessible to current and aspiring practitioners.

A Practicum in Behavioral Economics
Arthur J Caplan, Logan, UT
A Practicum in Behavioral Economics is a practice-based textbook covering the broad field of behavioral economics. Because behavioral economics is foremost a “test-and-learn” field of scientific inquiry that evolves according to experimental outcomes, so too should students test-and-learn. As such, the book’s primary goal is to help students experience behavioral economics through participation in the same experiments and games that serve as the foundations for, and shape the contours of, the field. With the help of this book students learn behavioral economics firsthand, and in the process create their own experiences. They learn about themselves – about how they make private and public choices under experimental conditions – at the same time as they learn about the field of behavioral economics itself.

CRIME JUSTICE

Introduction to Criminology
Shereen Hassan, Surrey, British Columbia
Dan Lett, Surrey, British Columbia
Leah Ballantyne, Pukatawagan, Manitoba
Although this open education resource (OER) is written with the needs and abilities of first-year undergraduate criminology students in mind, it is designed to be flexible. As a whole, the OER is amply broad to serve as the main textbook for an introductory course, yet each chapter is deep enough to be useful as a supplement for subject-area courses; authors use plain and accessible language as much as possible, but introduce more advanced, technical concepts where appropriate; the text gives due attention to the historical “canon” of mainstream criminological thought, but it also challenges many of these ideas by exploring alternative, critical, and marginalized perspectives. After all, criminology is more than just the study of crime and criminal law; it is an examination of the ways human societies construct, contest, and defend ideas about right and wrong, the meaning of justice, the purpose and power of laws, and the practical methods of responding to broken rules and of mending relationships.

EDUCATION

Contextualised open educational practices: Towards student agency and self-directed learning
Jako Olivier, Mahikeng, South Africa.
Charlene du Toit-Brits, Potchefstroom, South Africa
Byron J. Bunt, Vanderbijlpark, South Africa
Amit Dhakulkar, Potchefstroom, South Africa.
This book covers original research on the implementation of open educational practices through the use of open educational resources at the university level. The emphasis on open education in this book is on contextualising resources, supporting student agency and fostering self-directed learning specifically within a South African milieu. The envisaged chapters cover conceptual and review research and empirical work focussing on open educational practices and the use of renewable assessments. The work starts off with an overview of an institutional-wide open education project that prompted the research followed by research on open education in terms of various modules in the health science, music education, law, philosophy, dietetics, anthropology, French language learning, journalism and political science. There is a clear gap in the literature on open education in terms of open educational practices, specifically in terms of contextualising resources, supporting student agency and fostering self-directed learning in a South African context. Despite the existence of some general works on open education in terms of policy, social justice and open textbooks, this book will be unique in exploring the intersections of openness, specifically with contextualisation, student agency and self-directedness.

Trauma Informed Education
Govind Krishnamoorthy, Toowoomba, Australia
Kay Ayre, Joondalup, Australia
Dayna Schimke, Queensland, Australia
As an educator, have you ever wondered about students, “Why can’t she just control her behaviour?” or “Why did he do that?” The demands of the classroom, and the scrutiny of teachers, often leave little time for teachers to consider the complex needs of children experiencing traumatic stress. Drawing on their lived experience and professional expertise, the conversations with trauma-informed education experts in this unique book offer educators an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the needs of students and strategies for responding with compassion and empathy. In a time of rapidly emerging scientific discovery, and social and political challenges, this book encourages educational leaders to question the fundamental assumptions of dominant pedagogical practices and sets the foundations for innovation in education.

ENGINEERING

Introduction to Mechanical Engineering Design
Author: Jacqulyn A. Baughman

Description: This collection of videos, exercises, and readings align with the course of the same name at Iowa State University. Students taking the course are expected to complete a semester-long team-based project based on addressing societal needs through the development of an engineering design project. The Pressbook walks through the design process with tips and exercises along the way. (I recommend the webbook over the PDF version for this reason)

Basic Engineering Data Collection and Analysis, Stephen B. Vardeman and J. Marcus Jobe

Book description:
In Basic Engineering Data Collection and Analysis, Stephen B. Vardeman and J. Marcus Jobe stress the practical over the theoretical. Step-by-step, students get real engineering data and scenario examples along with chapter-long case studies that illustrate concepts in realistic, thoroughly detailed situations. This approach encourages students to work through the material by carrying out data collection and analysis projects from problem formulation through the preparation of professional technical reports—just as if they were on the job.

GENDER STUDIES

Gender in Canada: A Companion Workbook
Edited by: Rebecca Yoshizawa
Primary Subjects: Gender studies, gender groups

This workbook is designed for first or second-year sociology of gender or gender studies courses, focusing on the Canadian context. It is divided into five topics - Theory and Concepts, Institutions, Work, Family and Intimate Relationships, and Bodies and Health. This workbook does not replace a textbook, instructor teachings through lectures, class discussion, class assignments, or other standard undergraduate course materials. Instead, this is an activity book: a course companion, working alongside and with those course materials. It is designed to build competency, capacity, and confidence with course materials, concepts, and arguments. It does this by embracing the concepts of embodied learning, iterative scaffolding, and reflexive insight. "Embodied" means doing things with your body and not just your mind; "scaffolding" means breaking things down into constituent parts that can be gathered together to build something bigger; and "reflexive" means thinking about oneself in relation to broad concepts and contexts around us. The workbook presents four types of content. (1) Each chapter has one or two pages of written content deemed "Insights to Think About," which are summative guides to help students grab onto big ideas. (2) The chapters also have "Words to Try," encouraging a usable lexicon. (3) Chapters have thoughtfully designed "Activities." The activities help students to get ideas down, give those ideas meaning and order, and prepare students to do more engaged work in course conversations and higher-stakes assignments. (4) Finally, each section ends with "My Insights On," where students can record their "big picture" ideas and things they want to explore more in their course discussions and other assignments.

HISTORY

The European Experience: A Multi-Perspective History of Modern Europe, 1500–2000
Jan Hansen, Berlin, Germany
Jochen Hung, Utrecht, Netherlands
Jaroslav Ira, Prague, Czechia
The European Experience brings together the expertise of nearly a hundred historians from eight European universities to internationalise and diversify the study of modern European history, exploring a grand sweep of time from 1500 to 2000. Offering a valuable corrective to the Anglocentric narratives of previous English-language textbooks, scholars from all over Europe have pooled their knowledge on comparative themes such as identities, cultural encounters, power and citizenship, and economic development to reflect the complexity and heterogeneous nature of the European experience. Rather than another grand narrative, the international author teams offer a multifaceted and rich perspective on the history of the continent of the past 500 years. Each major theme is dissected through three chronological sub-chapters, revealing how major social, political and historical trends manifested themselves in different European settings during the early modern (1500–1800), modern (1800–1900) and contemporary period (1900–2000). This resource is of utmost relevance to today’s history students in the light of ongoing internationalisation strategies for higher education curricula, as it delivers one of the first multi-perspective and truly ‘European’ analyses of the continent’s past. Beyond the provision of historical content, this textbook equips students with the intellectual tools to interrogate prevailing accounts of European history, and enables them to seek out additional perspectives in a bid to further enrich the discipline

MUSIC

The Bible and Music
James F. McGrath, Indianapolis, I
The Bible and Music by Dr. James F. McGrath provides an introduction and overview of the various ways that music and the Bible have been and continue to be connected. Part 1 focuses on history, presenting what we know about how music in the Ancient Near East sounded, how markings in the Masoretic Text of the Hebrew Bible have been interpreted as musical symbols, how chanting of biblical texts has featured liturgically in synagogues and churches, the impact of the Protestant Reformation, and musical developments in North America as enslaved Africans encountered biblical texts and stories. Part 2 focuses on specific texts in Jewish and Christian scripture and looks at how they have been interpreted through the process of setting them to music, including the soundtracks of cinematic depictions of biblical narrative and allusions to the Bible in popular music. Part 3 focuses on composers from the Middle Ages all the way down to the present day. Throughout the book, musical examples are not merely mentioned but embedded so that reading and listening may be seamlessly combined. The book does not presume prior knowledge of either music or the Bible, and additional links within the text provide definitions and further explanations for those who need or desire them.

Music Appreciation: History, Culture, and Context
Bonnie Le
Francis Scully
Steven Edwards
Music makes us human. Every culture on earth has music. In fact, every human society extending back into prehistoric times has had music. Most of us are surrounded by music. We use it to enhance our mood and to regulate our metabolism, to keep us awake and help us go to sleep, as background to accompany the work, study, exercise, and relaxation that fills our days. But it is precisely when music steps out of this background and asks for our attention, engages our memory and our expectations, that it becomes a fundamentally artistic endeavor. Music is a sonic response to a question that’s not really about sound at all, but rather is historical and social. The study of music is the study of human thought, experience, and history. This course is about the musical imagination. It’s how to think about music, but it’s also about music as a mode of thinking. (inspired by Michael Hays, Professor of Architectural Theory at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design: Welcome to The Architectural Imagination (edx.org).

WRITING

University Academic Writing for International Students: A Usage-based Approach (it says it is in beta but it’s been through a couple of iterations, I just need to re-make the cover, ugh). This text is used quite a bit in our international composition program, I can probably reach out to the current instructors and get syllabi/ancillaries if you want.

This resource is designed specifically to meet the academic writing needs of international students studying at universities in the United States. The materials in the book can be covered within a 14-week semester, but each chapter or section may also be used independently. Based on a series of needs analysis projects, this resource provides an overview of major rhetorical patterns of writing that are commonly used in university settings in the United States. These commonly required genres include descriptive and evaluative summaries, short essays, comparison and contrast assignments, literature reviews, descriptive reports, and proposals.

Scientific Writing for Publication we haven’t run the final ‘check’ on this one, mostly because Dr. Link uses it every semester and makes changes as she goes. So if you see something odd let me know. I think this one is tailored for a graduate student audience.
This book presents a genre-based approach emphasizing strategies that derive from a field of research focusing on strengthening the language skills of multilingual English speakers.
